Trenches are the most enduring visual legacy of the First World War. These defensive field works, which began as muddy rifle-scrapes in 1914, evolved into elaborate multi-layered systems, with dugouts, fire steps and emplacements, placed in a zig-zag pattern stretching for miles and miles. By 1918, trenches had withstood almost all of the ferocious tools of war deployed by the warring nations.
