The MG 08 (Maschinengewehr 08), an adaption of the Maxim gun, was the standard heavy machine gun used by German forces. It was water-cooled, belt-fed, and capable of sustained fire. Set up in overlapping fields of fire, the MG 08 could mow down attacking infantry and (with a dose of luck) disable attacking tanks with armour piercing ammunition.
