BRITISH EMPIRE
In the beginning of the First World War, Britain had the smallest land army of any of the major armies. Although highly professional, the long grinding years of warfare lead to the largest expansion of manpower in British history, and by 1918, the British Empire called upon millions of men from across its vast empire, from Britain itself to overseas dominions like Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and most numerous of all, India.
